Robert "Bob" Jones Obituary

Robert N. (Bob) Jones, 89, passed away peacefully in his sleep in his home on April 19, 2024, in Ogden, Utah.

He was born September 11, 1934, in Ogden, Utah, to Ned Euguene Jones and Ada Honora Thorsted.  Bob lived in Ogden most of his life.  He lived in Arizona as a child while Ned worked for the phone company.  The family later moved back to Ogden. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1952.

He started driving a soda pop delivery truck for Utah Bottling Works at 15 years old.  He delivered to many stores around Ogden.  It wasn’t until recently that we found out that part of his delivery route included many of the brothels along notorious 25th Street in Ogden!

Bob married LaRelia B. Fowler in the Logan Temple on April 28, 1955.  Bob passed away just 9 days short of their 69th wedding anniversary.  They lived in Ogden.

Bob started his lifelong career working for the J.W. Brewer Tire Company on his 20th birthday as a tire buster.  He later became a tire salesman, but he was always a tire buster.  He took care of all his customers.  He would go to their homes, leave his truck and take their cars back to the shop for tire changes.  After work he would go out to construction sites to change tires on heavy earth-moving equipment, working well into the night.  He kept tires on equipment that built I-80 up Weber Canyon, I-15 from Ogden, north, I-84 north, Willard Bay, Causey Reservoir, and many other projects in other states. He did all he could to keep his long-haul truckers on the road as well.  Bob had customers all over the state of Utah and western Wyoming.

Bob took care of many other members of the family.  He would run errands or do minor repairs for LaRelia’s mother and sisters.  He painted Grandpa and Grandma Fowler’s house multiple times over the years.  He would travel to Boise to work on his mother and dad’s house after his dad passed away.  He also spent time working on the house, cleaning and painting, getting it ready to sell after his mother passed away.

After 50 years of service and doing what he loved, he retired on his 70th birthday.

After a few years of retirement, Bob went back to work as a parts runner for Karl’s Diesel.  Several times a week he and his dog Charlie would go to Salt Lake and pickup truck parts and return them to the shop.  He loved this job and knew the best routes in and out of Salt Lake to miss all the heavy traffic.

Bob was a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He was an Elder, and served in the position of Building Security for 8 years.  He loved this job and took great pride in making sure that the church building was secure every night, even after he was released from his position.

Bob loved taking pictures, which is why he is in so few family photos.  He took pictures at all of the family parties and reunions.  He always had the latest Canon camera that was available, and he took it everywhere.  For a time, he had a Minex camera, similar to the spy cameras in the movies, because he could carry it in his pocket and didn’t have to carry his big SLR.  He eventually went back to the big camera he carried all the time.

He loved vacation trips.  The family traveled to California, Oregon, Seattle, and South Dakota.  After the boys moved out Bob and LaRelia traveled to the beaches on the Oregon Coast, staying in Cannon Beach.  They often met LaRelia’s sisters there.  They made many friends in and around Cannon Beach.

After one of his granddaughters was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, Bob worked hard doing fundraising for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.  His customers were always willing to help.  Bob and LaRelia and many others supported the annual Walk-a-Thons.

Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing.  As a teenager, he caught a 5-pound brown trout out of the Ogden River and had his picture holding the fish in the Ogden Standard-Examiner.  Later in his life, he was able to travel to Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories where he caught a 45-inch Pike.  He also had this mounted to hang on the wall in his office.

Deer hunting was another activity that Bob enjoyed.  He enjoyed both archery and rifle hunting.  One year he harvested a 4-point buck that was almost perfectly symmetrical.  He had the head mounted to hang on the wall.  This mount spent years in his office as well as the den at home.

He also enjoyed pheasant hunting in the area around Corrine in northern Utah.  The opening day of the season was always a big event.  Mike and Scott walked the bottoms of many irrigation ditches to scare the birds up for him.  He always had his shotgun in his truck in November.

He is survived by his wife LaRelia Fowler Jones, sons Michael D (Barbara) Jones and Scott D. Jones, 5 grandchildren Cody, Kira, Allie, Adam, and Ashley, 2 great-grandchildren, Braden and Joscelyn and one great, great-grandchild, Hazel as well as one brother Ronald B. Jones.  He is preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Tara.

The family would like to thank the hospice nurses from Community Nursing Services, Andrea, Deana, and Laura.  We appreciate the comfort and kindness that you gave Bob and his family.
