Gayle Smith Obituary

Gayle S. Smith, our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 22, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.  He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and he always strived to live in a way that showed his love for his Savior.

He was preceded in death by his eternal companion; Dixie Lee Wilcox Smith, his parents; Tom and Meryle Smith, and his sister; Iris Yanda (Bill).

He is survived by his five children, Becky Cook (Cory), Brandon Smith (Natalie), GayLynn Applonie (Chris), Matt Smith (Jalena), and Andy Smith (Trudy); 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and his sister; Lola Miller (Jim).  Gayle's greatest joy was his family, and he cherished every moment spent with them, especially at his favorite place, the family ranch in Fish Haven, Idaho.

Gayle proudly worked as an F-16 Crew Chief on Flight Test at Hill Air Force Base before retiring.  He possessed a deep love for horses, training them throughout his life.  His free time was often spent working with the horses, hunting, camping, and exploring the beauty of the mountains.

On October 15, 1965, Gayle married his sweetheart, Dixie Lee Wilcox. Two years later, their love story was sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan, Utah Temple.  They shared a remarkable 54 years of marriage, filled with unwavering love and devotion.

Gayle will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Gayle’s children would like to thank Encompass Hospice, Independence Home Health and Hospice, and the staff at The Lodge at North Ogden.
