A.J. Kelly Obituary (1918 - 2002)

A.J. Kelly OGDENa"A.J. Kelly, beloved husband, dad, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at his home in Ogden. A.J. was born February 9, 1918 in Brookhaven, Mississippi, the fourth son of the late Willie Kelly and the late Octavia Furdinand. He attended school in Brookhaven, Mississippi. He married Mattie Mae Hall on October 18, 1938 in Brookhaven, Mississippi. To this union was born five children. At an early age, A.J. gained the New Hope Baptist Church in Brookhaven, Mississippi, where he served faithful until he moved to Utah in 1950. He united with the New Zion Baptist church. A.J. served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1946. He served his country in WWII. A.J. was employed and retired from Hill Air Force Base as an aircraft painter mechanic after 27 A 1/2 years. He never met a stranger and especially loved babies and young people. He loved his family and his extended family. He was known as a very good neighbor always ready to help anyone he could. He loved life and people and always encouraged his family and the entire community. He loved golfing, fishing and hunting. In his later years, his garden was his pride and joy. A.J. was never idle. He was always doing something to stay busy and encouraged all the family to do good. The community will not be the same without A.J. We give thanks to Almighty God that our husband and father departed this life in a beautiful and peaceful repose. He gently closed those loving eyes and whispered "Peace Be Thine". The weary hours, the days of pain, the sleepless nights are passed. God saw the road was getting rough and the hill was hard to climb. A.J. leaves to celebrate the triumph of life over death, his wife, Mattie Mae Kelly, three daughters, Vernon K. Davis, Roy, UT, Lovey (Vernon) Hairston, West Haven, UT, Rosie K. Tillman, Ogden, UT, one son, Willie Jackson, Brookhaven, Mississippi, ten grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, one God-daughter, Annette (Dennis) Carpenter, Riverdale, UT, one sister, Allie Mae Bryant, Brookhaven, Mississippi, three brothers, Willard (Corine) Kelly, Roy, UT, Sidney Kelly, Pittsburg, CA, Jessie (Beratha) Kelly, Ogden, UT, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both parents, one daughter, one son, one grandson, two sisters and one brother.
