Afton R. Daniels

Afton R. Daniels passed away April 4, 2002 at Mount Ogden Rehabilitation and Convalescent Center due to complications of renal failure.

Afton was born November 23, 1926 in Stockton, Utah to Ione Rigby and Lewis Rigby. She married John S. Daniels May 23, 1948 in Fairview, Utah. This marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple.

Mother was afflicted with polio as a child, limiting her ability to move around, however the restrictions allowed her to become a beautiful seamstress. Learning to use the treadle sewing machine to strengthen her muscles in her right foot and leg, she made dresses for her mother, sisters, daughters, and granddaughters. She made the draperies at the Hotel Ben Lomond Ball Room when it first opened. Graduating from North Sanpete High School in 1944, she worked at DDO the last year of the war and went to Utah State University until her marriage. She taught school under a provisional license in Brigham City from 1948 to 1949. With the arrival of her first child she became a full time mom. She returned to school in 1967, graduating from USU with a degree in early childhood and elementary education. Afton taught for Ogden City Schools from 1968 until renal failure forced her retirement in 1982. She taught every grade except fifth at Pingree and Jefferson Elementary. She was loved by her students and provided a great deal of stability in their lives. Retirement left her with time which she used to play bridge, make dolls, work in her yard, and quilt with her cousin Beth.

She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, the LDS Church, the Ogden Ladies of Elks where she was President twice and the Ogden 27th BPO-Does with her daughter.

Afton is survived by her three children, Melinda (Ryan) Williams, Ogden; Vern Ann Daniels, Juneau, Alaska; and John Steeves Daniels, Ogden; six grandchildren, Cary and Jamie Maiello, Ryne and Casey Penrod, Kellie Graham, Zachary Graham, Dagny Daniels, and Morgan Daniels; and one great-granddaughter, Lillian Maiello. Also surviving are her sister, Barto (Reed) Briggs; many cousins; one niece; and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Special thanks to Dr. Senekjian for 20 years of care and love to mom.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Kidney Foundation, in care of the Bonneville Dialysis Center, 5575 South 500 East, Washington Terrace, Utah 84405.
