Afton Sycamore Larsen Obituary (1918 - 2013)

BRIGHAM CITY - Our beautiful and vibrant mother and grandmother, Afton S. Larsen, a life-long resident of Brigham City, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, March 3, 2013. Afton was born to Arthur and Jane Schofield Sycamore on December 6, 1918, at her family home. Afton was the third of five children: Harold, Leland, Ruth, and Joyce. Afton acquired a keen business sense from her father, who founded Sycamore's, a community grocery store, located at 265 North Main. As a family-run business, Afton spent many years working in the store, where she made many friends. Afton found the love of her life, Alvin M. Larsen, when they were both attending Utah State University in Logan. They were married on April 6, 1940, in Farmington, Utah. While Al was away serving in WWII, Afton scrimped and saved so that when Al returned, they were able to purchase their first home. After ten years of marriage and much anticipation, they welcomed the birth of their daughter, Shauna. In 1965, Afton and Al established the Larsen Apartments, which she continued to run right up to the last days of her life. In addition to managing the apartments, Afton worked at the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in 1986, after 20 years of service. Afton loved her home and yard; she was very proud of her beautiful flower gardens and spent countless hours making them a showpiece for all to enjoy. Her home was a haven for her family, and became the gathering place of family activities that she so enjoyed. Afton was the proud mother of Shauna Whitson (Mark) of Layton, UT, and loving grandmother to Clay (Pamela) Coleman of Mendon, UT; Heather (Pete) Skow of Boise, ID; Kimberly (Aaron) Alvidrez of Litchfield Park, AZ; Christopher Larsen of Brigham City, UT; and Nichole Whitson of Roy, UT. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Paul, Alex, John, Taylor, Jackson, and Natalie. Afton is preceded in death by her adoring husband, Al. Being with grandma was like being in the arms of an angel - we will miss you with all of our hearts. The family would like to acknowledge Hospice and Integrity for the loving care they have provided, and the loyalty of her Grandson, Christopher who watched over her, allowing her to fulfill her wish to remain at home. Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at the Brigham City Cemetery, 325 S. 100 E., Brigham City. Friends may call on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham City.
