Amelia Smith

OGDEN - Amelia Shaw Smith, 84, with her family at her side, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at Crestwood Care Center from causes incident to age. The family expresses appreciation for the tender attention and care exhibited by many who ministered to her during her lengthy stay.

She was born October 5, 1920 in Liberty, Utah to James E. and Virtue Chard Shaw. She married Bert N. Smith on January 8, 1941 in Liberty. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Amelia was her husband's treasured partner in Smith and Edwards, Co., Farr West, Utah. She was a member of the Highland LDS Ward where she served in various callings in the church. She also helped pioneer the branch in Ruby Valley, Nevada. There, at the OX Ranch, she spent a life-time of memorable summers with her family as they engaged in the ranching business, home grown on Amelia's world class cooking and motherly pampering. If her loving husband was the back and brains, she was the heart and soul of the successful operation, the very glue that held it all together: cowgirl, gardener, baseball player, patriot, devoted church member, center of the family, saint.

Surviving are her husband, Bert N. Smith; two sons and two daughters, Sherma (Hugh) Sloan, Aurora, CO; James (Paula) Smith, Liberty; Ruth Ann (David) Gladwell, North Ogden; Steven R. (Carolyn) Smith, South Ogden; 22 grandchildren and 17 A 1/2 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother and one sister, Rulon Shaw, Idaho; and Mary Jane Johns, Ogden.

She was preceded in death by a son, Brent S. Smith, a daughter Sharlene S. (Michael) Casey, two brothers and four sisters.

Those wishing to do so may make contributions to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund in lieu of flowers.
