Arley Jay Wallace Obituary (1926 - 2008)

ARLEY JAY WALLACE April 22, 1926- September 2, 2008 SUNSET - Our Father, Arley Jay Wallace who was also known as chief, bishop or boss, passed away due to cancer. If you knew him well, you understood the titles meant little to him. Positions of leadership simply gave him an opportunity to make the world a better place. He believed in upholding moral and civic laws to the best of his ability. If you were on the side of an issue he cared deeply about; know that the argument was never personal but rather it was centered on what he thought was ethical. Knowing his motto, "The measure of a man's value is the degree to which he has made a difference n the lives of those he has touched", would explain his passion in serving Sunset the city he loved. He was raised in Ogden and Roy. In his youth, he was known as "Wally" and "Javens". He described himself as adventurous. "I got stopped a lot, but never arrested." He met Florence, his wife to be, at the Continental Bakery. He was instantly smitten and they began courting. Because of the war, the couple was wed in San Francisco, August 19, 1944, and a few days later he was shipped out to the Pacific war front. He served in an elite group of 1500 merchant marines. When Jay was discharged he and Florence settled in Sunset where they raised a family of five and ultimately lived there until their deaths. Besides rearing a strong family, he was active in The National Guard, was a volunteer fireman and a fire chief of Sunset City. He also served as a Sunset City Councilman, an emergency preparedness coordinator, was on the board of advisors for Camper World, and was a member of the Sunset City JAYCEES. He worked at Hill Air Force Base and was an instrumental member of the Minute Man Missile project until his retirement. Because he was never one to slow down, Jay also worked for Classic Demo giving out samples which he enjoyed doing because he genuinely loved conversation and people. If you wanted to get Jay talking, all you had to do was mention the city or his hobbies-the conversation never ebbed. He was a man who was always willing to help anyone, and he could repair anything or build something out of nothing. If there was a crisis, he was one of the first to respond and one of the last to leave. It only took a question about how to solve a problem and magically he was there the next day, with tools in hand and smile-ready to work. Arley had many things that brought him joy, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In summing up his life he said, "I think my life has been a good life... My disposition is, I've got to touch the stove to know it's hot. But I don't know that anybody has a stronger testimony of the Savior than I do". We his children, thank him for his legacy of service and his examples of love and generosity. We love you Dad. Arley is survived by his children Linda (Larry) Brown, Judy (Keith) Cisney, Robin (Brent) Johnson, Bradley Wallace, Scott (Elka) Wallace, twenty grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Florence, parents, Arley and Lorene Wallace, and his brother Irvin Wallace. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Chapel, 220 West 975 North, Sunset, Utah. Friends and family may call Monday, September 8, 2008 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Myers Roy Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West, Roy, Utah, and Tuesday from 9:45-10:45 a.m., prior to services at the Chapel.
