Kaye Bowman Obituary (1935 - 2014)

Artie Kaye Van Orden Bowman January 22, 1935 ~ April 7, 2014 BRIGHAM CITY - Artie Kaye Van Orden Bowman was the 7th daughter born to Artie Knight Van Orden and Edith Irene Fjelsted Van Orden on January 22, 1935. She was born in the family home in Thomas, Idaho west of Blackfoot. They were hoping for a boy to assist her father on the farm, but the whole family loved her and made a fuss to hold and take care of her. A brother, Alan, finally arrived five years later. Kaye grew up surrounded by a loving family and many friends. She enjoyed swimming in the irrigation canals and spent warm summer nights cooking over on open fire and sleeping out in the back yard with her best girl friend who lived across the street. Kaye was a hard working student. She wanted to please her parents and family. She had a beautiful voice. People loved to listen to her sing. Her home was close to the Jr. High School and it was known as a great place for birthday and other occasions for parties where good food and good times were enjoyed. Kaye loved her parents and learned the Gospel well from them. They seldom missed Sunday Services. Her parents would take the family to Stake and General Conferences where she would sit between them and feel the love they had for the General Authorities and the Prophets of the Church. She was taught to pay a full tithing by watching her Father as he collected all his paper work and calculated his taxes and then wrote the tithing check and cheerfully took it to the Bishop who lived across the street. He whistled when he was happy and she remembered him whistling each time he left the house with the tithing check. Kaye had a strong testimony of the restoration of the Gospel. She studied her family history and knew the details of Joseph Knight's contributions to assist with the translation and publication of the Book of Mormon. Other ancestors from her Mother and Father's families were stalwart pioneers and assisted Church leaders colonize the west. On 7 April 2014 she slipped away following a courageous five plus year battle with breast cancer to join the eternities and her loved ones there. Kaye was recognized for many talents and abilities including sewing dresses and other clothing. Her mother taught her to sew at home and she became an expert with the help of her 4H Leader. She participated in the State Fair where she received Champion Blue Ribbons for her sewing. She looked beautiful when she wore her own dresses to dances and other special occasions. She taught her daughters to sew and they carried on the tradition. She was popular and attended High School dances and parties. She was active in music and drama and had major parts in several plays and operas. Kaye's father died when Kaye was in High School. She graduated from Snake River High in 1953 and attended Ricks College her freshman year. She went to Idaho State College the second year, and graduated from Utah State College the third year with an Elementary Education Degree in 1956. She married Ross Bowman in Dec 1955 in the Idaho Falls Temple, and taught first grade in Preston, Idaho the next year. Their first child was born while they were serving in the US Army in Toledo, Ohio. At the completion of their tour, they moved to Brigham City, Utah where they spent the next 38+ years at Thiokol Corporation building Solid Rocket Motors. Six more children were born in Brigham City. They retired in 1996. Kaye kept busy with the children, garden and her Church callings. She served as the Primary Chorister for 12 years and memorized the words and music to many of the songs of that period. She loved her children and taught them to be honest and honorable people. She jogged and worked out regularly. They all learned to ski and spent most of their vacations camping out and hiking in the mountains of Utah, Idaho, and Oregon. They had a big garden and canned lots of food. Kaye was invited to sing in many special choirs and singing groups. She sang with three sisters at hundreds of funerals and when one of the sisters moved away they continued to sing as a trio. She sang in the choir at the dedication of the Ogden Temple which was one of the highlights of her singing career. After their children married, Ross and Kaye traveled to 40 different countries/unique places. They loved the people and the adventure of climbing the mountains during their free time. They served a mission in Sydney, Australia during the Summer Olympics. Their last big trip was to Antarctica. Kaye is survived by her husband Ross, seven children: Jane (Steven Hambleton) Salt Lake City, Carol (John Mallett) Moorpark, CA: John (Kristi) Bowman, Reno, NV: David (Jill) Bowman, Palo Alto CA: Richard (Angel) Bowman, Tracy CA: Edith (Aaron) Murdock, Salt Lake City: Kay Jean (Jon) Howell, Agoura Hills, CA. She has 28 grandchildren, and 13+ great grandchildren. She has two surviving sisters; Edith (Dallas Satterfield), LaJean (James Johnson) and a brother Alan Van Orden (Sherry). Preceded in death by her parents and four sisters. The family extends a special thanks to Integrity Hospice and the Angel Ladies there; especially Nicole, Tara, and Tonie who took such good care of Kaye. Also thanks to neighbors, friends and family members, and the Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers who were so kind and thoughtful in their support during the last six months of Kaye's life. We thank the Central Ward Relief Society for the luncheon and other services they provided. We appreciate each note and act of kindness. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Central Ward Building, 506 S. 200 E., Brigham City. Friends may call on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Myers Mortuary, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham City and on Saturday from 10:00 to 10:40 a.m. at the Church. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery.
