MANTUA - Benjamin Udell Smith, our dear husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, 84, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, November 29th, 2010 after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1926 to Benjamin Franklin Smith and Lottie Gertrude Gilmore.
He served his country in WW II in the 10th Army 7th infantry division. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart during the Philippine and Okinawan campaigns.
Following the war, he graduated from Texas Christian University in 1949. He started his career in the insurance industry, which moved him to Utah. In 1965 he met and married Karen Andersen of Brigham City. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Ben joined the LDS church in 1966 and remained faithful throughout his life, fulfilling many callings.
He was the sales manager at Intermountain Trailer. He was later employed as a senior liaison engineer at ATK, retiring in 1991 to the family apple farm in Mantua to care for the turkeys, hummingbirds and the apples.
He will be remembered as a dedicated family man, an avid golfer, a patriot who loved his country and flag, and a friend to all creatures that came to the farm.
Ben and Karen have four children, Benjamin Kyle (Sharon) Smith, Perry, Alan Edwin (Sandy) Smith, Brigham City, Lara Katie (David) Flinders, West Haven, and Jeffrey Paul Smith, West Jordan. They have nine grand-children and five great-grand children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mantua 1st Ward Chapel, 237 S. Willard Peak Rd., Mantua, UT.
Family will receive visitors from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Church.
Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery with Military Honors Accorded.
