Charles Benjamin "Ben" McComb
May 22, 1927 - February 21, 2018
Ben McComb, of Clinton, passed away peaceful on February 21, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home. He was born in Salt Lake, May 22, 1927 to Hazel & Charles McComb.
He grew up in Ogden, attending Ogden High. He enlisted in the Navy in 1945; one year after his father had died in the war. After WWII ended, he went to Utah State University, graduating with a degree in chemistry, and entered the Army as an officer
through ROTC.
Soon after, he met Doris McFarland, also from Ogden, and they were married
January 26, 1951. Stationed in post war Germany, they visited most countries in Western Europe. After his military service, he returned home to Utah, and began work as a health department inspector and chemist. With foresight, he went back to school at BYU and earned a degree in computer science. In 1966 he began work at Hill AFB as a computer programmer, retiring in 1988.
Ben & Doris enjoyed traveling, visiting 48 states, and many countries around the world, always returning home with an increased love for the USA. He was a proud
Democrat and active politically. Dad enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and being outdoors, especially with his family around him. Raised Protestant, he said he felt closest to God when he was outside in God's creation. He had served as a scoutmaster, helping teach that love of God, country & environment. He was a hardworking, self-reliant man, talented in many trades.
Of all his accomplishments, his most treasured was his 67 years of marriage to Doris and the love and respect of his family. Dad loved all his grandkids and was always there for encouragement and advice.
Ben is survived by his loving wife, his sister, Betty Phillips (John); sister-in-law, Carol Thomas; and his 6 children: Sue Smith (Kim), Pat Russell (Mick), Debra Bitton (Doug), Don McComb, Scott McComb (Sally), Lizabeth Hart (John), 14 grandchildren and 22
great grandchildren. Ben was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack
Thomas.
