Cheryl Lee Shumway Gocel Obituary (1956 - 2008)

Cheryl Lee Gocel LAYTON - Cheryl Lee Gocel, 51, died Feb. 11, 2008 in Ogden due to complications from cancer. She was born April 3, 1956 in Ogden, Utah the daughter of William H. and Wanda L. Stott Shumway. She was married to Bill Briseno with whom she had two very special sons, Zach and Chris that she dedicated her life to; they later divorced. She finally found the love of her life Edward Gocel, Jan. 30, 1982 in Las Vegas, NV. Cheryl's love for golf and dedication for Special Olympics lead to the founding of the golf program for Utah Special Olympics and through her dedication and efforts has become a great success. For all of her great efforts she was inducted into the Special Olympics Hall of Fame. Through her love for Special Olympics and her years as a waitress, she made many life long friends. Her most cherished times were with family and friends and she was especially proud of her Grandchildren. Cheryl is survived by her husband Ed; her parents; her sons Chris and Zach (Shari); grandchildren, Andrew, Maxwell, Samantha, Joel and Raychel. Stepdaughter Kathy and her children Cortney and Katelin; 1 sister Pamela Ann Garcia ; 5 brothers Jeff (DeeAnn), Steven (Karen), Leonard (Peggy), Adam (Lisa), Robert (Michelle) and many nephews and nieces. Our Sweet Dear Beautiful Wife and Mother, we hope when we meet again you will have a T-Time for us. Your loving husband and sons Ed, Zach and Chris. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Myers Mortuary of Layton, 250 N. Fairfield Rd. Friends and family may call at the mortuary Friday, Feb 15th from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Arrangements under the direction of Myers Mortuary of Ogden.
