Claud Harmon Pratt Obituary (1909 - 2001)

Our beloved father, grandfather, and brother Claud Harmon Pratt, age 92, passed away on Thursday, Nov 22, 2001, in the McKay-Dee Hospital. He was born Jan 3, 1909 in Hinckley, Utah, to Jane Marinda Harmon and Thomas Henry Pratt. He graduated from the Millard Academy, Utah State Agricultural College, and did his graduate work at the University of Chicago in Social Work Admin. While at Utah State, he was a member of the Utah State championship basketball team. On Sep 16, 1938 Claud married the love of his life, Dorothy Brough in the SLC Temple. She preceded him in death in Aug of 1997. Claud was an active member of the LDS church and held many positions. Claud dedicated his entire life to serving others. During an extensive career, he was Dir. of the Millard County Welfare Dept.; Rep. For the State Welfare Dept. in 11 southern Utah counties; Welfare Dir. and Relocation Ofcr. at the Topaz Relocation Ctr; Personnel Dir. for the Utah State Welfare Dept.; Superintendent of the Utah State Training School in Am. Fork; and for 25 years, was Superintendent of the Utah State Industrial School in Ogden. During his career he was a member of the Ogden Kiwanis Club for more than 25 years. He served as Chairman of the Weber County Community Council on Social Svcs.; District Chairman of the Bonneville Council of BS of Am.; Chairman of Dist. II Council on Criminal Justice Admin.; member of the Weber/Davis/Morgan Health Planning Council; member of the Utah State Correctional Assoc. Claud served as Brd. Member of the Nat'l. Assoc. of Training Schools and Juvenile Agencies. He was appointed by Governor Rampton to the State Advisory Committee on Corrections and was a member of the State Advisory Board of Family Svcs. In 1960 he was a member of the White House Conference on Children and Youth. He was invited to Rutgers Univ. to plan the Nat'l. Standards for training schools and juvenile agencies; and he served for 12 yrs. as member and vice chair of the U.S. Brd. Of Children's Aid. Claud enjoyed his golf, but his main enjoyment in life was his family. Claud is survived by his son, David (Carol) Pratt, Layton; granddaughters, Jennifer (Greg) Thorpe, No. Ogden; Catherine Bergstrom, So. Ogden; great grandchildren, Tyler, Matthew, and Allison Thorpe, and Bret Bergstrom; and his sister Grace Thomas, SLC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; and his four brothers.
