Cleone Ruth Vandyke Read Obituary (1916 - 2007)

Ruth V. Read OGDEN - Cleone "Ruth" Van Dyke Read, our beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on January 21, 2007. Ruth was born on August 3, 1916, in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of Lawrence A. and Alice Dinsdale Van Dyke. She married her loving sweetheart, Boyd Albert Read on March 14, 1940. She was a devoted mother to five children: Carolyn White (Robert), Annette Griffeth (VerNon), David B. Read, Alene Palmer (LeRoy), and Daron J. Read. Mom was employed early in her life for the Ogden City School Board office. She used her bookkeeping skills to assist Dad in their businesses. She was a long-time member of Ogden K-Anns (Kiwanis) Club and served as a Pink Lady volunteer at Dee Hospital. A graduate of Ogden High School and Weber College, she was active in the drama department with many lead roles. In her youth she gave dramatic readings. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served as a teacher in Primary, YWMIA, Relief Society, and as a member of a stake Relief Society presidency. She also served as a member of YWMIA Division 5-X Board. A special love was the extensive travel she did with her husband to many countries. She shared her knowledge and experiences in cultural refinement lessons. She completed a service mission with her husband at the Ogden L.D.S. Employment Center. Her children, l5 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren loved her for the many hours and times she spent as their mentor, babysitter, and friend. They will always remember her fun family dinners at home and barbeques at the cabin she and Boyd lovingly created for their family. Special thanks to dedicated caregivers from Home Instead Senior Care for their loving, kind companionship and service. We also thank the kind IHC Hospice nurses and CAN's who took such good care of our mom. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband; twin sisters, two brothers; parents. Survivors include her children and spouses, her brother Allan Van Dyke (Goldie); sister Jan Hunter (John), grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family is encouraging donations to L.D.S. Perpetual Education fund or a charity of your choice.
