DEAN J KIRKMAN

WEST POINT - Our loving dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa "Poppy Dean", returned home to his Heavenly Father on September 6, 2004 of complications following a hip replacement.

Dean was born in West Point, Utah to Raymond Kirkman and Mary Alice Bennett on January 27, 1922. He attended Davis County Schools and had fun memories of he and his two sisters riding their horse to school.

Dean was farming full time at the early age of 14. His accomplishments as a farmer/rancher have brought countless joys to his family.

Shirley Elaine Olsen spotted Dean atop a load of hay in Morgan. The young teens exchanged smiles. Years later they were married in Logan on November 26, 1941.

Dean and Shirley loved their West Point homes and the ground they worked together. Dad Dean was still farming at the age of 76 when his wife Shirley passed away.

Dean worked on his ground and with his cattle and Quarter horses with an amazing work ethic, and a strong foundation of honesty. He was one of the first members of the American Quarter Horse Association and owned one of the first Quarter Horse Stallions in the country in the early 1940's. Dad has raised many great working horses. Dad's name and the names of many good horses are spoken of often synonymously!

Dean served as President and Director of the Central Irrigation company for years. He also served on the board of the Ogden Area Beef Feeders, and worked in the Utah Farm Bureau organization.

Dad was hoping to see more rows of corn, green fields of hay and billowy white clouds in Heaven. He was an Elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We love you Dad!!

Surviving are two children and their spouses: Sheila and Ralph Visser; Lynn Dean and Merrilyn Kirkman both of West Point. Survived also by three sisters and one brother, Mrs. James R. (Ora) Brown, Mrs. Arnold (Blanche) Bingham, Mrs. Doyle (Florence) Abrams, and Nolan Ray and Rena Kirkman. Dad has eight grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one on the way!

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
