Delmar M. Moulton
OGDEN - Delmar M. Moulton, 88, died February 18, 2003 following complications brought on by a fall at his home that broke his hip. Delmar was born on July 19, 1914, in Heber, Utah, the son of determined parents, John T. and Arabell Moulton, who, shortly thereafter, settled in the Teton Basin in Idaho. In childhood, he and his dog Jack roamed the hills and valleys surrounding the Teton Mountains. However, hard work was also expected, and summers also found him mowing hay, milking cows, thrashing grain, and herding sheep on high ridges overlooking the beautiful valley. He met June Moulton, a second cousin, for the first time in 1934. Four years later, on October 8, 1938, they were married in Driggs, Idaho. In 1942, with tires and gasoline rationed, eleven flat tires could not deter them from their goal to be sealed, with their three daughters, in the Logan LDS Temple. A year later, following an injury to Delmar while stacking hay in Jackson Hole, they headed to Utah with hope for employment at the newly established "Hill Field".
Delmar's job in the engine maintenance shop at Hill Field allowed them to buy their first home in 1944 in Layton, Utah. Never-the-less, the end of World War II brought change for Delmar, June, and their family of three girls, with a new job at Wm C Parke and Sons Meat Packing, followed by a move into a basement home in Ogden, Utah, in 1948. Four more daughters joined their family before Delmar had his first son in 1954. By this time, the family had outgrown their basement space, and, over the next several years, Delmar, with help from friends and family, completed their home above their basement dwelling, where he lived the rest of his life. Another daughter and son joined their family by 1960, for a total of nine living children. To Delmar's credit, they are all "good kids".
Delmar was a local teacher and leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints throughout his life. Among many other callings, Delmar served as a Sunday school teacher, Ward Clerk, Stake Missionary, Seventy, and High Priest Group Leader. He served as the Bishop of the Mound Fort Ward in Ogden for six years. Shortly following his retirement from Parkes in 1979, he and June served a mission for two years on the South Pacific island of Palau. Upon their return they turned their efforts to the Temple where they served as ordinance workers in the Ogden Temple until their release in 1999. Five of their children, and seven of their grandchildren, also served full time missions, with one now serving.
By his friends and co-workers, Delmar was known as honest, hard working, and good humored. To those he served with in his church, he was respected for his integrity and compassion. And to his family, he was "Dad", loving and fair.
Delmar was preceded in death by a brother, Lester E. Moulton, and by two infant daughters, Janet, and Linda, and his son-in-law Patrick Griffiths. He is survived by his wife June Moulton; and by two brothers and a sister: Tharon (Jamene) Moulton of Placentia, California; Maurice (Carole) Moulton of Othello, Washington; and Thelda (Harl) Allen of Victor, Idaho; and a sister-in-law, Betty Moulton. His children: Carol (Sherman) Rawlings, Myrna Moulton, Coleen (Alan) Martindale, Lauana (Delton) Killman, Ardel (Michael) Olsen, Debra (Bruce) Forsyth, John (Val) Moulton, Margo Griffiths, and Mark (Janice) Moulton, as well as his 20 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren, will miss him very much.
His self-reliant and resourceful nature was never at rest, always building something "needed" or simply "better". He also never lost his love for the land and the mountains of his youth. Weekend and summer camping trips were a staple of his parenting. Trips back "home" were also frequent and eagerly anticipated events by both parents and children. Delmar is home now.
