Dirk Van Leer Obituary (2018 - 2018)

Dirk Van Leer, of Layton, Utah, passed away the evening of January 5th, 2018 in his apartment at Fairfield Village of Layton. He was born January 7th, 1929, to Willem Abram Van Leer and Geertruida Mookhoek in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Dirk married Sandra Faccioli in 1948 and they immigrated to the U.S. in 1949 with their daughter Gerda. They divorced in 1953. Dirk married Twila Jean Peck on October 14, 1955, and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They divorced in 1984. Dirk married Barbara Ray Foutz Paul on July 3rd, 1985 in Ogden. Dirk survived terrible adversity as a young teenager during the Second World War. He overcame that adversity to gain his education at the University of Leiden in Holland and the University of Utah. Dirk served in the United States Air Force and saw combat during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1954 after 4 years of service. Following his military service, Dirk worked in a long and fulfilling career as an X-ray Technician and Radiological Technologist, specializing in Nuclear Medicine. He worked at various Hospitals in Utah, Montana, and California. He was an active member of several state and national Radiological Societies throughout his career. In 2002, Dirk received a community service award for his work as Commander of the American Legion post in Clearfield. He was a member of the "Men of Song" choir and enjoyed fishing and hunting and traveling to see new places. He was also known for his ability to raise beautiful singing canaries. Dirk was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many church callings throughout his life. He loved his family and was always anxious to hear about the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Dirk was preceded in death by both parents; his wife, Barbara; brothers, Pete Van Hulten, Gerrard Van Hulten, Leo Van Domburg and John Van Domburg ; a sister, Truus Allart; and a daughter, Andrea Lee Van Leer. He is survived by daughters, Gerda Mason, Laurel Lefevre, Melinda Crandal, Valerie Acocks, and Darlene Van Leer; sons, David Coomans, Alan Van Leer, Steve Van Leer, Brian Van Leer, Russell Van Leer, and Paul Van Leer; 34 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 12th, 2018 at the Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. A viewing for family and friends will be held on Thursday, January 11th at Myers Ogden Mortuary from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will be at Myers Evergreen Memorial Park, 100 Monroe Blvd. Special thanks to the staffs of Fairfield Village of Layton, Aspire Home Care, and Encompass Home Care.
