Elbert Allen Baird Obituary (1919 - 2002)

ELBERT A. BAIRD Elbert Allen Baird, died peacefully Monday, January 28, 2002 at his home in Layton, Utah after 82 great years of life. He was born on the 10th of June 1919, in Joseph, Utah, the younger of twin sons born to Malvina Parker Baird and Brigham Young Baird, Jr. Elbert spent most of his growing up years in Draper, Utah. He attended Salt Lake County schools and graduated from Jordan High School in 1937. In 1939 he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 7 years, until 1945. He served aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma, prior to its sinking at Pearl Harbor. After he returned home from the Navy he was called to serve in the Texas, Spanish-American Mission for the LDS Church. On the 21st of September, 1950, he married his sweetheart, Mary Enniss of Draper, Utah, in the Salt Lake Temple. They have shared 51 happy years of marriage, and they are the parents of 6 children; Alauna (David) Gee, of Layton; E. Allen (April) Baird, of Kaysville; Ellen (Scott) Bailey, of Clinton; Suzann Baird, of Layton; Bryan E. Baird, of Kumamoto City, Japan and MaryLou (Michael) Bailey of Leavenworth, Washington. They are also the grandparents of 16 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. Elbert worked for over twenty years at Hill Air Force Base, until his retirement in 1975. Since then, he and Mary have enjoyed extensive travel around the United States, Together Elbert and Mary have served 3 church service missions and 2 full time missions; Texas, San Antonio and Chile, Concepcion. Elbert served as the Branch President of the Anchorage, Clearfield, Utah branch, and in the Bishopric of the Layton 5th Ward. He has been a Stake Mission President, and a stake missionary many times. One of his favorite callings was teaching the Gospel Doctrine class. He spoke fluent Spanish, and was learning Hebrew. He was a wonderful example of service to his family, his neighbors, and the church. He enjoyed reading, camping with his family, doing wood work in his garage, and maintaining a beautiful yard and garden. Elbert is survived by his wife and 6 children, his grandchildren, 2 brothers, Ross and John and 1 sister, LaVee Madsen. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 1 sister. The family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to the special caregivers of CNS Hospice who showed great concern and took such tender care of Elbert during his final weeks.
