Elenior "Ruth" Whetton Lakey Obituary (1941 - 2024)

After a brief illness and the effects of a full life lived, Ruth Lakey passed away peacefully Sunday morning, August 11, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was born Elenior Ruth to her parents, Wanda Grimes and Joseph Albert Whetton, December 23, 1941, in Ogden, Utah. She battled rheumatic fever throughout childhood, attended Ogden schools and graduated from Ben Lomond High School. Ruth and a friend went to the Ogden Rodeo where she met her future husband, the pair of friends swore off redheads that night. Bill and Ruth were married in Ogden on September 1, 1961. They raised 6 children in Roy and Taylor. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on January 16, 1970. Ruth was a valiant member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various callings in the auxiliaries throughout her life and supported her husband in the Boy Scouts of America, especially enjoying time with the Special Needs and Disabled Scouts. She valiantly and faithfully attended the temple weekly and encouraged many others to come with her. Ruth was a proud member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her older sisters, Georgia Whetton, Barbara Alkema; grandson, Jehiel (JehJ) Stone and her husband William (Bill) Lakey. She is survived by her children, David (DellLena) of Holladay, "Ruth" Ann (Jeff) Stone of Clinton, Curtis (Christal) of Riverdale, Dewey (Jessica) of Ogden, Elenior (Rich) Atkinson of Clearfield, Nick (Karen) Holdaway of Tacoma, WA; brothers Albert Whetton, Chad (Connie) Whetton and Michael Whetton all of Ogden,18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Thanks to McKay Dee ER and ICU doctors and nurses for their thoughtful and special care in her last days. Thanks to Applegate Hospice for helping her pass peacefully in the comfort and privacy of home. Thanks to Ogden Fire Station 3 for their caring transport home. Thanks to Myers Mortuary for taking care of final arrangements. Special thanks to the neighbors and Harrisville 1st Ward for the many years of service, love and friendship of our beloved parents. Viewing and Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 17 at the Harrisville meeting house at 435 W. Harrisville Rd. Viewing will begin at 8:30 am to 9:45 am. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am and interment following services at Myers Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Services entrusted to Myers Mortuary of Ogden.
