November 14, 1934 - August 31, 2016

Ellen Marie Rayl Knighton passed away August 31, 2016. She was born November 14, 1934 to Lester W. Rayl and Edith Callentine Rayl in Joplin, Missouri. She moved to Utah with her parents and eight siblings in 1946. She married James C. Knighton, January 8, 1952 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They established Knighton Optical in 1967 and were dedicated to providing great service to the community with their 25 stores and 150 employees. They retired in 1990 and enjoyed traveling in their motor coach. She is survived by her five children, Linda Knighton Willis, Daniel (Lynette) Knighton, Noall (Julie) Knighton, Guy (Julie) Knighton, and Gary (Terry) Knighton; two sisters, Norma Rock, American Fork, UT and Ruth Brown, Ogden, UT. Their twenty grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren, brought great joy to her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents; three brothers, James, Layton, and Clifford Rayl and three sisters, Doris Wick, Jennie Lewis and Elaine Potter.

Ellen served in many church positions & loved being a den leader in scouting. She was active in two book clubs, Republican Women and TOPS. She loved staying connected with family and friends through social media. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles. She was attentive to detail, sharp and savvy to the end.

She was the heart of the family and her parties were enjoyed by all! We love you Ellen!!

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Myers Mortuary, 250 North Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah. Family and friends may gather Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and prior to services from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. Interment will be at Syracuse City Cemetery.
