Esther Merrill
OGDEN - Esther Edwards Zuber Merrill, 90, of Ogden, died peacefully with her family and friends at her side on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at Washington Terrace Care Home. Prior to her short stay at Washington Terrace, she had been living at home, with the help of her caregiver and good friend, Mary, and dear neighbors, Larry and Donna.
She was born August 17, 1912 in Williamsburg, Iowa, daughter of Edwin Edwards and Annie Jones. She was the fifth of seven children. Sisters Neva and Grayce, and brothers Owen, Edwin Russell, and Charles preceded her in death.
Esther was proud to have graduated from high school. She lived for a time in Chicago, and enjoyed her administrative work in various medical and dental offices. In 1934, she married Clarence Zuber in Iowa. For a number of years, they lived in Spokane. Clarence died in 1949 and Esther moved to Ogden, where she met Lynn W. Merrill, whom she married in 1952. One of their great joys was spending their winters in California with their grandchildren. Lynn died in 1982.
She had been a faithful volunteer with St. Benedict's Hospital Auxiliary since 1983. She greatly enjoyed her volunteer work, and made many good friends during her more than 5000 hours of service.
She is survived by her stepson, Lawrence A. Merrill of Redwood City, California; granddaughters Charlynne Murphy and her husband John, of Woodland, California, and Melissa Burghardt and her husband, Jeff, of Camino, California; two great grandchildren, Matthew and Erin Murphy of Woodland, California; and one sister Ida Drobnis of New Jersey.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 26th at 11:00 a.m. at Myers Mortuary Chapel in Ogden, 845 Washington Blvd., with Sister Stephanie officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Benedict's Foundation, 6000 S. 1075 E., Ogden, Utah 84405.
