Fred Shelton Ball, Sr Obituary (1909 - 2004)

Fred S. Ball, Sr. RIVERDALE - Fred Shelton Ball, Sr., 94, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2004 at Mt. Ogden Nursing Home in Ogden. He was born August 18, 1909 in Coalville, Utah to James and Mary Wardley Ball. He married Gladys Thornton on February 5, 1930 in Brigham City, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden L.D.S. Temple in June of 1978. He attended school in Coalville and was active in sports at North Summit High School. He played semi-pro baseball during the war years for the Railroad Boosters and was a regular attendee at the Old Ogden Reds baseball games at John Affleck Park. He was an avid sports fan. He loved the Utah Jazz and the Oakland Athletics. Fred was an employee of the OUR and D Co. (Ogden Union Railroad and Depot Co.) and the Union Pacific Railroad from 1928 to 1974. He was proud of being a railroad man and a member of Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Surviving are his wife, Gladys Ball; two children, Fred S. (Joyce) Ball, Jr., of Salt Lake City; Vikki (George) Moellendorf, Ogden; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 12 brothers and sisters; and his daughter, Greta Joan (Milt) Bachman.
