George Furner Forsey
November 26, 1918 - January 6, 2015
The son of George Woodruff and Pearl Irene Furner Forsey, George was born November 26, 1918, in Provo, Utah. He was the oldest of six children. We can't imagine a man with a more natural, understated, good humor and pleasant nature. He was known by so many as the "nicest guy in the world". He spent his retirement years in St. George and referred to himself as a "latter-day saint George". To us, he was just a saint. What an honor it has been for us to have known him.
He began his life in the pioneer home of his grandmother Martha Ann Smith, daughter of Hyrum Smith. After his beloved father returned from WWI, they moved to Eureka, Utah, where he helped his father in the many successful businesses they operated there. He was the first manager of the Star theatre and brought into that bustling community many of the most famous early films. He worked in the family ice cream business. He was proud to proclaim, "I didn't need to come home for lunch on those days". He loved ice cream to his final breath.
After attending BYU, he volunteered to serve in the Navy during WWII and was assigned to work with RADAR, the cutting edge technology of the day. He served on the destroyer USS Benham DD-796. His ship took up station on the port bow of the Missouri for the official surrender ceremony of WWII. Also, during the war he helped assemble the B-24 bomber. He introduced an innovation that greatly reduced the cost and assembly time of that plane.
After the war, he became one of the first television technicians in Utah and later worked as an Electrical Process Planner for a government missile program. Finally, he fulfilled his dream to be a business owner, like his Dad, and purchased a Norge self-service dry cleaning franchise in Ogden, Utah. He turned it into a very successful dry cleaning operation and Laundromat.
George married his sweetheart Betty Evelyn Andrew in 1941, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with three children, Betty Lou (Robert Attridge), John (Jan) and Carol Louise (Charles Olsen), before her untimely and tragic death in 1960.
He married Margaret Estelle Schafer, also in the Salt Lake Temple in 1961, and she brought two more children into the family, Julie (Frank Knaus), and Dan (Shanna). Together, for just short of 50 years, they nurtured five children, 30 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandkids. Margaret died in 2010.
They served a mission together in South America where he served as Branch President in Tarija, Bolivia. Mom often mentioned that there were many Jorge's (Spanish for George) running around in Bolivia, who had been named after their beloved branch president.
They also served in the presidency of the Family History Center in Ogden for many years and over their lifetime, were literally responsible for the temple work of thousands of their ancestors as well as helping many others who sought out their expertise.
