George Eugene Larkin
1939 - 2023 Our loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away, George Eugene Larkin on Thursday, June 15, 2023 from complications due to Alzheimer's disease. The eldest of five children, he was born May 11, 1939 in Logan, Utah to George William and Bernice Noble Larkin. Through love and kindness, Eugene set a great example to his siblings at a young age which led to a lifetime bond of friendship and love for one another. Eugene was raised on a small family farm in Smithfield, Utah where he learned to value honest, hard work, to be thrifty, and from his mother to love music. He had a beautiful baritone voice that he shared numerous times in his life, bearing testimony of his Savior Jesus Christ through music. Eugene graduated from North Cache high school in Richmond, Utah. He raised a prize cow "Daisy" in 4-H for which he won a trip to the national 4-H convention in Chicago, Illinois. Dad served a faithful mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to the Northern States mission. Soon after Disneyland first opened, Eugene spent a summer selling tickets there.
Eugene graduated from Utah State University with his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry. He met Noreen Nelson through a cousin and 4 years later they were sealed in the Logan temple on October 14, 1966. They spent the first 5 years of their marriage in Murray, Utah and then moved to Roy, Utah where they resided for 51 years. He adored his beloved sweetheart and treated her as such. Dad never spoke an unkind word or raised his voice to Mom. Eugene and Noreen enjoyed 56 years of marriage together. Eugene worked for 35 years at Hill Air Force base as a chemist, retiring in 2001.
Eugene and Noreen were blessed with six children, Clarice Larkin, Joseph (Sandra) Larkin, Boyd (Marci) Larkin, Nancy (Greg) Spell, Susan Larkin, and David (Sabrina) Larkin. Dad had a sweet tooth and knew where every ice cream shop was in Northern Utah and would take us as children to enjoy it with him. Eugene treasured time with his family. He spent many hours fishing with his sons, family vacations traveling in our station wagon, and camping in the Uintas. Dad was an avid supporter of the Boy Scouts earning his Silver Beaver award after numerous years of service. He helped numerous boys along the way to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
Dad had a firm testimony of Jesus Christ and his gospel and demonstrated it often through his Christlike service and unconditional love shown to those around him. Eugene faithfully served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints including Bishop, Bishopric counselor, high counselor, and Stake Mission president. Eugene served as a welfare service missionary at the employment center following his retirement. Eugene and Noreen served as a senior couple in the Utah Ogden mission and enjoyed that time together. Dad spent the last few years of his life involved in the Ogden chapter of the Sons of Utah pioneers in which he met and made many friends and savored his time there.
Eugene is survived by his wife Noreen, 5 of his children, his siblings Glenn (Karen) Larkin, Lyle (Maryann) Larkin, JoAnn (Rick) Starks, Janet (Larry) Gruing, 25 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Susan.
