GEORGE MADDOCKS
Brigham City - George Griffith Maddocks, died on February 22, 2004 of health complications attendant to aging. George was born on June 29, 1918 in Salt Lake City to Ebenezer and Catherine Mary Maddocks. He was predeceased by his mother and father, a sister, Virginia and a brother, John Ebenezer. He is survived by his wife, Frankie Vera Wilson Maddocks, his sister, Nancy Cox of Salt Lake City, son, Marvin Maddocks of Midland, Texas, daughters Lynette Gatlin of San Antonio, Texas and Cathryn Collis of Salt Lake City, seven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
George's early life was spent on the family dairy farm, the Rose Hill Dairy in Salt Lake County. From age ten or eleven George began milking cows and weeding acres of sugar beets. As he grew up he gained responsibility, collecting milk from other farms by the time he was sixteen., later driving a delivery route, then managing the milk processing facility. Although very difficult and strenuous work, George thrived with the pride of participating in a successful business venture. Throughout his life he talked about his experience working the Dairy as the most fulfilling career experience of his life.
The dairy was sold in the early fifties and George went to work as a railroad mechanic on the Duchesne water tunnel project out of Heber City. Shortly thereafter he went to work for Waterfall Construction in Ogden, then Fife Construction in Brigham City. Over his work life he became a master mechanic, particularly with diesel engines. He had an intuitive sense with all things mechanical and could fix just about anything. He was a proud, 50-year member of the Operating Engineers Union, Local #3. George and Frankie lived in Brigham City from 1955, where they were members of the Eagles Lodge.
