H. Joan Owen
OGDEN - H. Joan Owen (Joanie) died of heart failure on Friday, May 27, 2005 after fighting incurable, crippling, painful disease for over 40 years. She cared for and supported her crippled mother for 22 years alone.
She was born Nov 13, 1928, a daughter of Hazel Jones Owen and Horace James Owen. She lived in Ogden all her life.
She graduated from Ogden High.
She and her mother were both published writers. Joan wrote poetry, short stories, and for several years wrote Home Teaching lessons for her own ward and stake. These lessons were used by several other stakes until the Ensign began publishing Home Teaching lessons. She spoke at several different wards and at special times in her own ward.
She was active in the Ogden 7th Ward in Junior Sunday School for 12 years and Relief Society as teacher and visiting teacher. She began in church service helping her mother who was Relief Society President during WWII. She served eight years on Lorin Farr Stake Sunday School board. She wrote poems, plays, and etc. whenever asked.
She worked in genealogy, often using Ogden Genealogy Library while she was able; she attended sessions weekly at the Ogden temple. Toward the end of her temple work she filled her car with older ladies to help through the temple.
She always found something to laugh about, taught by her mother to see the funny side of life.
She was preceded in death by her mother, two brothers Norris James Owen and George Neal Owen, one sister-in-law Eleanore Schmidt Owen (Norry).
She is survived by one sister-in-law, Dolly Toney Owen (Neal), two nephews, two nieces, and several great nieces and nephews.
She retired from HAFB in 1985 after 34 years of service.
For many years, she cared for cats.
Joan found it to be a beautiful world, full of good people. But looked forward to being reunited with her mother, family, friends and dear animals.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Utah, P.O. Box 573659, Murray, UT 84157.
