HARRY GILES HALL
ROY - Harry Giles Hall, loving patriarch of our family, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2010, at the age of 83 while residing in the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home. Harry was born February 28, 1927 in Bountiful Utah, a son of George Wilford and Minnie Giles Hall. His father passed away when he was six years old, so Harry lived from age 8 until 14 in the Lund Home for boys in Farmington, Utah.
Harry attended Davis High School and then Pleasant Grove High School, where he graduated in 1945. Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea, achieving the rank of staff seargent. Following his discharge, Harry attended Brigham Young University, graduating in 1952 with a B.S. in physical eduation and a minor in mathematics.
Harry married Beryl Elaine Barnes on April 24, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they had five children, all of whom they raised in their home in Roy, Utah. Beryl passed away on September 3, 2007. Harry spoke often of how much he missed her during their nearly three years apart.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Harry spent many years as sports director in his ward, stake, region, and area. He also served as Young Men and elders quorum president and as executive execretary. He was a great home teacher.
Harry held various jobs during his lifetime, including coke oven worker at Geneva Steel, mail sorter at the terminal in Ogden's Union Station, public school math teacher, and finally, athletic director at Hill Air Force Base, where he retired in 1982 after 24 years of service.
Harry was a sports-lover extrordinaire. He coached hundreds of young men, retaining his friendship with a number of them through the remainder of his life. His passion for sports was such that even in his final days, he could recount the details of games he had played in, coached, or observed as a spectator decades before, especially games that involved his sons.
The one thing Harry loved more than sports was his family. In addition to his devotion to Beryl, he provided encouragement, mentoring, financial support, and never-faltering love to his children and grandchildren and to his sons- and daughters-in-law. While he was frugal on spending for himself, he was extremely generous with others. Maybe the best advice he ever gave was: "Life is too short to hang onto bad feelings for anyone." He followed this maxim all his life.
Harry is survived by his five children: Janet (John) Riley, Robert (Ruthann) Hall, Susan (Marshall) Morrise, Cheryl Hall, and Wayne (Jill) Hall; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and brothers Don and Norman Hall. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two sisters, and two brothers.
