Hendrika Rika Whiteley Obituary (1924 - 2010)

Hendrika "Rika" Hermina Nellestein Whiteley Ogden - Hendrika "Rika" Whiteley, 86, died August 12, 2010. She was born April 8, 1924 in Ogden, Utah the daughter of Herman and Hermina Dellemijn Nellestein. Rika lived all of her life in Ogden; she attended Mound Fort Jr. High and graduated from Ogden High School in 1942. Rika married Harold J. Whiteley January 14, 1946 at her parent's home. They were later sealed for time and eternity in the Ogden Temple on January 14, 2000. She was a member of the LDS Church. She spent many days quilting and had the joy of helping others with the Relief Society; she also taught Primary and was a Relief Society visiting teacher. Rika was awarded the President's Volunteer Gold Service Award for her 15 years of service for serving food to seniors at the No. Ogden Senior Center. She received a letter of thanks from President George W. Bush. Rika loved to quilt and made quilts for every occasion; every grandchild and great-grandchild has received at least one quilt from their Grandma; this was her legacy. She enjoyed service to others and truly exemplified this through her constant Relief Society service and giving nature. Rika was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Hermina; her adored husband, Harold J. Whiteley; oldest son Paul J. Whiteley and sister, Margretha Nalder. She is survived by her children, Carl S. Whiteley and wife Teri, of Ogden, Jane Whiteley of California, Jean Pond and husband David of California; brother, Herman Nellestein and wife Barbara of Layton; 14 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Liberty City Cemetery, 3929 N. 3500 E. A viewing will be held on Sunday, August 15th, 2010 at Myers Ogden Mortuary from 6 to 8 PM and Monday August 16th, 2010 from 9:30 to 10:15 AM.
