Henry Richard Shinney
North Ogden - Despite mom's fierce battle to keep dad here for another twenty-five years, he finally succumbed peacefully at home to complications of esophageal cancer on March 21, 2010.
Richard was born December 23, 1933 in Ogden, Utah to Harry and Ruth Burton Shinney. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1952. He married Thelma Montgomery, the girl across the street, on March 26, 1953 and they were sealed March 26, 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple.
They made their home in North Ogden where they raised five children, Sue Dunn, North Ogden, UT, Lynn (Ann) Shinney, Pocatello, ID, Doug (Marla) Shinney, Sandy, UT, David Shinney, Draper, UT and Ann (Karl) Hoffman, Logan, UT. He has thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Richard was a member of the North Ogden 4th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as the ward clerk and several other callings. He served a welfare services mission with his wife.
He worked at Hill Air Force Base for thirty-six years. He loved animals, especially his dogs. He was show secretary for several years for AKC approved dog shows. He was involved with the draft horse show at the Weber County Fair where he developed many close associations with the people there. Dad loved family get-togethers. We had a Shinney Shindig every summer which he looked forward to, and would plan months in advance. Any chance for the whole family to get together was a special time for him. He enjoyed taking photographs at all of our get-togethers and if he could catch anyone sleeping instead of participating he never missed the chance to capture it.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Jean Shinney. He is survived by his wife; children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and sister Marian (Kirby) Allred.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at the North Ogden Coldwater Stake Center, 770 East 2100 North. Friends may call on Wednesday, March 24th at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. from 6 to 8 and Thursday at the church prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 am.
