Herman Marcus Hooten
Pleasant View - Our loving husband, father, grandfather, and mentor returned home to his Father in Heaven on May 6, 2012 at the age of 61.
Herman was born May 8, 1950 in Tuskegee, Alabama to Henry Sr. and Lillian C. Hooten. He married Kathleen Gianoli, and together they had two children, Melanie and Daniel; later divorced. He married the love of his life, Vickie Shapiro, on August 26, 1988. They were blessed with two children, Megan (Jase) and Colin. They were later sealed for Time and All Eternity in the Ogden Utah Temple.
Herman was a tremendous athlete, and had the opportunity to attend the University of Notre Dame on a football Scholarship. He later obtained his Master's degree in Social Work at the University of Utah. Herman accepted a position at the University as the Program Director of the Ethnic Minority Health Sciences Center, and was instrumental in expanding the program beyond the boundaries of Utah. He served as a Professor of Social Work at Weber State University until the time of his death.
He served in various callings in the LDS Church and gave selflessly of his time to help a student, friend or stranger achieve his or her goals. Throughout his life he volunteered his time to causes he believed in while serving with several community and academic boards and committees. Herman provided guidance and inspiration to many, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Herman is survived by his wife; four children; two grandchildren (Carter Anthony and Gabriel Marcus); brother, Henry Jr.; sisters, Nancy (James Garrison) and Angela and countless extended family. He is preceded in death by his loving parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at the Pleasant View 6th Ward Chapel (900 West Pleasant View Drive).
