Hermina Vanleeuwen Dumas Collins Obituary (1909 - 2002)

Hermina Collins Well mom, it wasn't "the incidence" but that nasty second-hand smoke that finally got you! Hermina (Minnie, Min, Mickey) VanLeeuwen Dumas Collins died April 25, 2002 at the home of her daughter surrounded by loved ones. She was born Sep 5, 1909, the oldest of six children to George H. and Marie Timmers VanLeeuwen. Her brothers and sister include Petrus (deceased), George (Gail) VanLeeuwen, Claude (deceased) (Berniece) VanLeeuwen, Evelyn (Glen) Hoogland-Geilman and Kenneth (Germaine) VanLeeuwen, all of Ogden. From a very early age she learned to care for her brothers and sister which led her to a career in trying to help troubled youth. She was instrumental in establishment of the Ogden City Juvenile Detention to separate under age children from adult offenders. She also worked at the Martha Home, Moweda and was a Deputy for the Weber County Sheriffs Office retiring in 1969. She married Louis H. Dumas January 4, 1927 and was blessed with two children, Louis Keith Dumas (Dolores) of Roseville, CA and Cheryl M. Dumas (Pleasant View, UT). Lou died Oct 22, 1974. She married Elwood Collins June 13, 1978. They traveled extensively and enjoyed "their golden" years together. He died November 14, 1989. She was an avid reader and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She has one granddaughter, Margaret Dumas, California; four grandsons, Richard (Mary) Dumas and John Dumas, both of California; Christopher Pierce (Kelli), Pleasant View; and Brian Pierce (Mandy) of Taylor. She has two great grandsons, Alex and Brayden; and two great granddaughters, Kathryn and Bailey. She also has two stepchildren and numerous step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. She has many special nieces and nephews of which she was very proud. In addition, she has had a very special friend and sister of the heart, Irene Bingham of Ogden, for over 65 years. Friends and family are invited to join us in a celebration of her life at the home of her sister, 5625 S. 1060 E., South Ogden, following services. We would like to give deep appreciation and thanks to Vista Care Family Hospice and especially Sharon, Crystal, Erin, Hiliary, Andrew, Desiree and Arnold. Thanks also to Wee Care Pharmacy and Alpine Home Medical Equipment for their immediate response to our needs.
