Brigham City, UT

BRIGHAM CITY - Homer Reed Simonsen passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the home of his son, Randy Simonsen in Brigham City, Utah of old age and natural causes. He was 97 years old.
Born February 2, 1916, in Brigham City, Utah. Reed was the youngest of nine children of Niels Christian Simonsen and Charlottie Merrell Simonsen. He graduated from Box Elder High School in 1934. He was senior class secretary and treasurer, lettered in tennis, and played three years on the basketball team where he earned the nickname of "slick" which carried with him into college. Reed attended Weber State
College, Utah State University, and Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, where he received his degree in the Science of Horology (school of time measurement and clock and watch making.)
He worked at Hill Air Force Base and then went into business and owned and managed Simonsen Jewelry in Brigham City, Utah from 1947 to 1958. He left the business to work for Thiokol in quality control. He then went into business for himself at the Bon Marche and Lamonts in Ogden, Utah until his retirement.
Reed married Doris Margaret Davis in the Salt Lake Temple on November 15, 1940. They were married for 66 years.
Reed was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and lived in the Brigham City 3rd Ward. Although dad had to leave his home in 2006, he always loved and considered the 3rd Ward his home Ward. Reed was the fundraiser chairman for the new 3rd Ward recreational hall in 1954. He served in various positions in the ward. He served an LDS Mission in Denmark from 1935-1938. The highlight of his mission was when he served as translator for President Heber J. Grant. He and his father were both Rotarians in the Brigham City Rotary Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. His dear wife, Doris passed away in 2007. He is survived by his sons: Dr. Chris R. (Karen) Simonsen, Bountiful; and Randall D. (Sharee) Simonsen, Brigham City. He has 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Randy would like to extend a special thanks to his wife, Sharee for her love and devotion as she showed for dad in caring for him lovingly in her home the last six years of his life.
Special thanks to the staff of Encompass Home Care and Hospice of Brigham City, Utah during his final days. Thank you for coming and paying your respects to this honored man.
