Hyrum Lloyd Estep Obituary (1925 - 2005)

Hyrum Lloyd Estep As the new year dawned Hyrum Lloyd Estep,79, a valiant servant, returned to his heavenly home on January 3, 2005. He was born, April 30, 1925 in Plymouth, Utah. The son of Ethel Luella Archibald and Hyrum Steed Estep, he received his education in Box Elder County. When he was eighteen years old, WWII had begun. He enlisted in the Air Force and served for three years. Day after day, he flew countless hours in the most difficult territory. While in the service, he attained the rank of Corporal. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal with three Oak Clusters as well as a Good Conduct Medal. He served long and well, flying over 750 hours. After the war, the Republic of China awarded his squadron the Meritorious Medal for Honorable Service. In 1947, he met and later recounted that he fell instantly in love with Ruth Arvilla Black who had come to Plymouth, Utah to teach school. They were married in the Idaho Falls temple June 17, 1947. After a short stay in Plymouth, they moved to Blackfoot, Idaho where Lloyd helped build Bingham County Hospital. When Lloyd and Ruth moved back to Utah, he gained employment at the Ogden Arsenal which later became Hill Air Force Base. He worked there for over thirty years. After retiring, he was employed full-time with Sorenson Research which became Abbott Laboratories where he worked thirteen years. After this time he retired, but the retirement never seemed to last very long. He was called back twice to help in his line of work, industrial engineering. As his eyesight began to fail and his health deteriorated, he finally retired from Abbott Laboratories but continued doing consulting work with several firms in Utah and Idaho. He also received an invitation from the government to travel overseas and teach his methods, but was reluctant to return and declined. He worked hard and gave much to the work he did. He was very good at his profession and well sought after. When his health and eyesight prevented him from working, he retired home where he was happiest. He was always busy and active in the church as well as in his work. He held positions at both the ward and stake levels. He served in a bishopric, and as a ward clerk, but his true love was in the Sunday School. Lloyd was a quiet and self-effacing individual. He never judged any person, saying it wasn't his job to do so. He is preceded in death by two sons. He is survived by his wife Ruth B. Estep; 2 daughters, Peggy (Scott) Sheen, Patricia (Robert) Henry; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Good night, Lloyd. Sweet dreams. Enter well into thy rest.
