Idona June Smith Penrod, 88, passed away at home with family members September 22, 2012 in Ogden, Utah. She was born June 18, 1924 in Malad, Idaho the daughter of Albert Ishmael Smith and Charlotte Richards Smith.
She attended Ogden School for the Blind where she graduated. Idona married Vern Alford Penrod, December 8, 1942, they separated in 1978.
Idona was the youngest of 12 children who have all preceded her in death except one brother, Norman Smith of Carsen City, Nevada. Idona was blessed with two daughters, Charlotte Penrod Pont (Carl), and Terrie Penrod Gould (Rodney). She is survived by seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was always willing to try new things and was quite adventurous. She greatly enjoyed the freedom that came from each of her three guide dogs; a boxer named Cookie, a golden retriever named Nugget, and another golden retriever named Dolly. She was an animal lover and always had a dog in her life. She enjoyed reading books and discussing politics. She was very patriotic and worked at the arsenal at Hill Field during WWII.
Idona also loved music; she played the piano and sang with many choruses. She sang with Sweet Adelines International and traveled to numerous competitions throughout the US. She gave cheer to others through her song and piano music. She always had a joke to share with others and enjoyed laughter. She was very brave even to the end and never complained about her circumstances.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 1:00 at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. Friends may call from 11:00 to 12:45 at the mortuary prior to the services.
