Iretta Rosella Hammer May Obituary (1913 - 2013)

Iretta Hammer May passed away July 7, 2013. Iretta celebrated her 100th birthday in February. She was born Feb. 27, 1913, in Malad, Idaho. She was the second of 10 children born to Chloe Marble and Louis Hammer. The family moved to Brigham City from Malad when Iretta was eight years old. She graduated from Brigham City schools. Iretta married Stanley A. May in Salt Lake City on Dec. 16, 1931. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan LDS Temple on Dec. 17, 1940. Stanley passed away on March 3, 1975. Mom was a faithful and devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had served in many ward and stake positions within the church. She taught a religion class at the Indian School in Brigham City, and made lasting friendships with many of her students. Iretta officiated in the Ogden LDS Temple for several years, she was a tour guide at the beautiful tabernacle in Brigham and a volunteer at the Senior Citizen Center in Brigham. Iretta was a stay-at-home mom while her children were growing up. When the children were grown, she worked at American Sportswear Co. and was the head supervisor for the lunch room at Bunderson School for several years. Iretta enjoyed writing poetry, crocheting and had a special talent for painting. Iretta had one son and two daughters. Franklin (deceased), Marilyn (Dean) Atkinson of Clarkston, Beverly (Jim) McEntire of Centerville, and a daughter-in-law, Sally May of Honeyville, Utah. She has 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 22 great-great-grandchildren with one on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley, son Frank, grandson Steven May, her parents, two brothers, and six sisters. She is survived by one brother, Clifford Hammer and one sister, Dorothy Dearden. Iretta has seen many changes in her lifetime. She has gone from horse and buggy to the luxury of modern vehicles. She has seen many different presidents of the United States and many leaders in the LDS Church, and she has also witnessed many changes within the church. Iretta has made many wonderful friends while living at Williamsburg Retirement Home. The family would like to thank Scott and his staff for the care they have given to her. We would like to give a special thanks to Hospice; Dr. Marcussen, Cathy, Buffy, Merilee, and all the aides for the loving care they gave to our mother. We would also like to thank her granddaughters Julie and Lari for helping her with meals. Funeral services will be noon, July 10. Prior to the funeral, there will be a viewing from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Meyers Mortuary in Brigham City, Utah. Burial will be at the Harper Cemetery.
