Irwin Bruce Mcquarrie Obituary (1906 - 2001)

OGDEN - Irwin Bruce McQuarrie, 94, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at his home. He was born June 9, 1906 in New York City, a son of John Gray and Maggie Seegmiller McQuarrie. John was then President of the Eastern States Mission. Bruce married Ruby Loretta Epperson January 30, 1930 in the St. George LDS Temple. They were divorced in 1953. He then married Nina Hatch Steele of Panguitch on December 21, 1968, in Salt Lake City. She preceded him in death on February 15, 2001. Bruce grew up in various Utah towns, including Beaver, Castledale, Wallsburg, and Park City, completing high school in Salt Lake City. He served an LDS mission in Australia from 1925-28. Bruce was a successful missionary, helping to convert many people to the LDS faith in Huon Valley, Tasmania, where he was District President and then Conference President. He returned to study at the University of Utah, leaving before graduation to work in the securities industry in Los Angeles. With the onset of the Great Depression, Bruce went to Washington DC to study medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine, graduating in 1935. He was a surgical resident at the University of Minnesota, then helped with his brother's medical practice in Richfield for three years before setting up his own practice in Ogden. Bruce served briefly in World War II, then returned to Ogden to practice general surgery. There he worked to found the first regional multi-speciality clinic, opening the Ogden Clinic in 1950. He continued to be a leader in medical care, successively becoming President of the Ogden Surgical Society, the Weber County Medical Society, and, in 1960, the Utah State Medical Association. In community service, he was a member of the 70th LDS Ward and contributed many hours carrying out physical examinations for LDS athletic groups. After retiring from the Ogden Clinic in 1971, Bruce became Medical Director of the IRS Service Center in Ogden for six years and maintained a private practice. He then joined the Ogden Plasma Center, where he served as Medical Director until retiring in 1992. Bruce never lost his love for medicine, travel, and people. In October, 1990, the people of Huon Valley, Tasmania, invited him back to enjoy the fruits of his mission there. He was deeply moved by this three week visit, returning with many photographs and honors that showed how great his influence had been. Bruce is survived by his son, Dr. Irvine Gray McQuarrie of Shaker Heights, Ohio, his daughter Trisha Marie Schiffbauer Scott, of Eureka, California, and his step-son Donald Hatch Steele of Logan. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and six brothers.
