Joan Gail Simmons Smith Huston

Brigham City, UT- Joan passed away peacefully at her home May 13, 2010 at the age of 77. She was born Sep.12, 1932 in Lincoln Place (Pittsburgh) PA. to Russell Webster Simmons and Rosine Sophia Lauth. Her family moved to Salt Lake City, UT in Sep. 1947 where she attended East High School. She married Leslie Alfred Smith Dec.6, 1948 in Elko, NV and later divorced. They had two children Barbara Jean Smith and Leslie Alfred Smith, Jr. Joan worked for Sperry Utah Co. in Salt Lake from 1958-1962 as a clerk. She married Clifford Raymond Huston, Jr. July 21, 1961 in Salt Lake City, UT. They moved to Brigham City, UT in Feb. 1962. She received her GED Jun.25, 1962 through Weber State College. Joan worked at IRS in Ogden as a tax examiner from 1963-1980. She attended Box Elder School District Community High School and earned her diploma May 26, 1987. Joan was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in the Primary, Young Women's, Relief Society and in the German Name Extraction Program which she recently received her 25-year certificate. She volunteered as a reading tutor for two years at Mountain View Elementary School. Joan has tremendous love for her family. Her interests included: being a homemaker, cooking, gardening, canning, oil painting, and doing many acts of kindness for family, friends and neighbors. She enjoyed providing many acts of compassionate service. Her parents and four siblings, Russell W. Simmons Jr.; Marie Nadine Bair; Ralph George Simmons; Robert Brown Simmons and both husbands preceded her in death. She is survived by her children Barbara (Michael) Rich, Nampa, ID; Les (Jill) Smith, Perry, UT.; many loving nieces and nephews; nine grandchildren and eight (one pending) great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be on Monday, May 17, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Brigham City Mountain View Ward chapel, 105 Fishburn Dr., Brigham City, UT
A viewing will be held on Sunday, May 16, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 205 S. 100 E. Brigham City, and Monday, May 17 at 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the church. Interment at the Brigham City Cemetery.
