Willard, Utah
John (Jack) Brent Zundel, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and Mountain Man Extraordinaire passed away in his sleep surrounded by friends and family on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the age of 83 in Brigham City, Utah.
He was born on September 1, 1943, to Stephen Ulysses and Ethel Ruth Myers Zundel of Willard, Utah. John was raised in Willard and attended Box Elder High School. John married Carole Jean Rallison on September 16, 1960. They had two boys, Jay and Tracy. They were later divorced.
John married the love of his life, Marla Johnson, on June 18, 1965. Marla took on the role of mother to these boys and together they added a little girl, Christine. John and Marla were married for 60 years. They met at the DDO where they were both employed. They built a home and raised their family in Willard, Utah.
John worked for Thiokol in data processing during the early years of the computer age. He moved his family to Arizona for a couple of years while pursuing the same vocation. While in Arizona, he earned his pilots license and shared ownership in 3 small planes. They moved back to Utah in 1968. He then distributed newspapers for the Ogden Standard Examiner. John served as a part-time police officer with the Willard City Police Department. Later, he joined a partnership where they made pre-fabricated furniture. That adventure did not work out, so John made the decision to sell electronic components for Arrow Electronics. He was successful as a salesman and businessman. He took that success to Wyle Industries where he was a regional sales manager for many years. In 1993, John gave up the corporate life. He and Marla opened up a Postnet store. They eventually expanded to three stores before retirement.
John enjoyed doing the things he liked, surrounded by his family and friends. He especially enjoyed annual hunting trips where he was introduced to muzzleloading. This in turn piqued his interest in Mountain Man Rendezvous. 45 plus years later his village of friends grew exponentially.
Wherever mountain men shall meet, he is known as Wapiti, Mountain Man Extraordinaire. Sometimes Reverend Billy Saltine. Then again it could be The Twinkie Man. It was conditional upon the situation.
John was preceded in death by his wife; Marla, two brothers; Robert Zundel and Steve (Carol) Zundel, and a sister; Norma Dee (Roy) Torgeson. John is survived by his sister; Monie (Clyde) Westley, and two brothers; Wynn (Sherry) Zundel and Rick (Diane) Zundel.
John will be missed by his children; Jay (Kerri) Zundel, Tracy (Sara) Zundel, and Christine (Shawn) Stephensen, 10 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 9:00 - 10:45 a.m. with a funeral to follow at 11:00 a.m., both at the Willard 2nd Ward Chapel, 665 W. 7615 S. Willard, Utah. Interment will take place at the Willard City Cemetery following this service.
