John Samuel Hinds

John Samuel Hinds ended his journey on this earth peacefully in his sleep on January 13, 2011, at the age of 80. He was born on May 16, 1930, in Ipswich, SD, to Herbert Hinds and Inez Heaton. He was the youngest of 17 children.

He married Beverly Bryan in 1954 in Wichita, KS. After raising five sons, the couple divorced but remained friends. John is survived by children Don and Hanny, Gregg and Kathleen, Kenny and Barbie, Gary and Cathy, and Lance and Denielle. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by one grandson, Tommy, and all siblings but two sisters, Edith Wahlen of KS and Grace Carr of SD.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955 and moved to Ogden in 1965, where he was employed at Hill Air Force Base until retirement. He raised his family in Kanesville, where he enjoyed horses, hunting, and bowlinga"even at 2:00 a.m. He also enjoyed pool and reading Louis L'Armour books.

John was a devoted member of the Roy Elks Lodge and served as Exalted Ruler from 1989-90. It was at the Elks that he met his longtime friend and companion, Patty Henley. John and Patty enjoyed each other's company for many years until her passing.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Elks National Foundation in Memory of John S. Hinds. The family would like to thank the staff and residents at Peach Tree Assisted Living and the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 19, at 1:00 PM at Myers Roy Mortuary 5865 S 1900 W, Roy, Utah. A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 PM, and on Wednesday from 11:45-12:45 PM, prior to services.

Interment in the Roy City Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded.
