John Anthony Lopez
FARR WESTa"A courageous battle for life ended on Wednesday, February 21, 2001, when John Anthony Lopez returned to Heaven at the Columbia Ogden Regional Hospital. John was surrounded by friends and family when Our Lord released him from his pain and suffering after years of battling numerous afflictions.
Born June 1, 1950 in Cheyenne, Wyoming to Anthony and Constance Lopez, John spent most of his childhood growing up in Greeley, Colorado before moving to Ogden in 1966 where he would graduate from Ben Lomond High School in 1969. Months later, John would enlist in the United States Air Force where his life changed forever after being sent to the Philippines. There he met Florentina Pineda whom he would eventually marry on January 3, 1972. John brought his new bride to the United States where they would live in Nevada and California before returning to Ogden, Utah. John worked for the United States Post Office for a number of years before retiring after suffering complications from a diabetic disorder.
John's heroic fight against renal failure, cancer, and heart problems that would follow became an example to those blessed to have known him.
John's faith in the Catholic Church, serving with the Knights of Columbus, and his intimate relationship with Jesus Christ proved to be the strength that allowed him to endure the ailments that would come to suppress his body. His will and strength brought faith to those within the Catholic community, John finding ways to attend mass when it seemed improbable or watching on television when his body made it impossible.
John's love of bowling, classic cars and travel carried him to as full a life as can be lived in 50 years. He loved sharing time with his family and loved being in the company of as many people as could be filled in a room. He looked forward to his trips to the mall, enjoying his time being around people and shopping for the newest trends. John was well known for his charitable work, his giving to those in need even when it did not fall within his means.
John is survived by his love of 29 years, Florentina, his four sons, Marcell, Brian, Josh and Jerome all of whom were with him during his closing years in Farr West. His parents, Anthony and Constance of Ogden, never missed a breath of his life. His three brothers, Michael of Ogden, Dale of South Ogden, Samuel of Hastings, Nebraska and sister, Lucille Trevino of Kimball, Nebraska. All of who shared significant parts of their lives to be with John. And finally, his grandson of two weeks, Trevin John, you'll watch him grow from Heaven.
Special thanks to all who have prayed for him, and all his family and friends we fail to mention by name. We ask a special blessing upon Fathers Bircumshaw, Sherman, Bob and Hope and upon all the Sisters at Ogden Regional Hospital. We wish to offer our gratitude and thanks to all the doctors and nurses on staff at ICU who helped to comfort and prolong John's life especially Doctors Reis and Senekjian. Our appreciation also goes out to the staff at the Bonneville Dialysis Center and Alpine Home Care for their care and support of John.
