John E. Sorensen passed away Nov. 5, 2017, at the age of 83, after a battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was born July 8, 1934, in Mt. Pleasant, UT, to John Peter and Stella Jensen Sorensen. He was raised in the mining camp of Sweets, UT, where his father was a coal miner. At age 6, John's family moved to Salt Lake City. During the summers, John enjoyed working for his uncle on a farm in Mt. Pleasant.
After high school, John began his career at the phone company in Salt Lake City. In 1969, he married Mary Lou Allred and moved to Ogden. He then commuted to work in Salt Lake in his cute Volkswagen bug. He retired from the phone company after 45 years.
His greatest joy was spending time with his seven children and their families. He loved camping, boating, and water skiing, and he taught his family to do the same. To see John glide skillfully through the water on one ski was impressive.
The children loved when he would tell jokes around the campfire. He'd begin the joke, then start laughing so hard that he would have everyone laughing before he even told the punch line. John lived a life of kindness and integrity.
John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Lou Sorensen; seven children and their spouses: Alice Jayne Vialpando (Dave, deceased), Nancy Lengyel (Jim), Janet Hopkins (Ron), Michael John Sorensen (Cherie), Annette Loveland (Kenny), Jill Sorensen (Rob), Helen Sorensen (Derreld); 18 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
