On February 17, 2025, our beloved Johnnie Mae Davis passed away surrounded by her loving family. Born on August 3, 1942, in Brookhaven, Mississippi, Johnnie lived an inspiring life filled with compassion, courage, and an unwavering love for her family and community.
Prior to settling in Delaware, Ohio, in 2020 Johnnie spent the greater part of 60+ years in Utah where she worked at Hill Air Force Base before devoting her time to public service as an aide in the Weber County School District. Her work reflected her supportive nature and her passion for making sure every child had a proper lunch. She was a courageous and compassionate woman, known for her kindness and her loving spirit.
Johnnie accepted Christ at a youthful age and was baptized at Siloam Mission Baptist Church in Brookhaven, Mississippi. She was known for her unwavering faith and was an active member of the Queen of the West Chapter #170 Eastern Star, Ladies Auxiliary Post #66, and Sego Lily Assembly #65.
She lived by her faith, offering kindness, love, and compassion to all those in need. She had a special love and talent for cooking and baking without a recipe, frequently sharing her delicious creations with those she loved; often welcoming those who were hungry into her home for a meal.
Full of jokes, Johnnie always had one and a hilarious comeback ready for all that challenged her. Johnnie enjoyed the thrill of gambling (nickel machines) at the casino, playing scratch off tickets on accession and had a fondness for soap operas, and cherished the time spent with her family. Her unwavering love for her family was evident in everything she did.
Johnnie is survived by her son John Bush (Brenda Bush), daughter Heavenly Davis,
grandchildren Tinisha Danzy (Ushah Danzy), Leavonya (Alea) Starks, Leavander (Antwon) Starks, Evita Starks, LaToya Velez (Mikhail Velez), Nicholas Bush; great-grandchildren Taisia Barnes, Dionisio Danzy, Nelease Danzy, Lahni Danzy, and Mikhail (Mav) Velez.
She is also survived by her siblings John (Mary) Norwood, Voncile Byrd Johnson, Denise (Gerald) Spellman, Artie (Dot) Randal, Murial (Edward) Dozier and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, father Artie Byrd, mother May Margaret Norwood, her husband Carl Davis, her daughter Elease Steward-Underwood and her brothers Clayton Norwood, Minor Lee Wilcher, and Terry Lee Byrd and other close loved ones and family members.
Johnnie was loved dearly by all who knew her, instilling her values and love for family into all of us, something we will cherish and carry on to future generations forever.
A celebration of Johnnie's remarkable life will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 11:00AM MST at Myers Mortuary in Ogden, Utah.
As we remember Johnnie, we are reminded of the verse in Proverbs 31:25-26, "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue."
This perfectly encapsulates Johnnie's life and legacy. We invite those who knew and loved Johnnie to leave memories and upload photos to her memorial page. Your shared memories will serve as a comforting reminder of the beautiful life she led.
