Joyce Hollenbeck Collins

Joyce Collins passed gently away on April 24, 2014. She was born February 28, 1921 in East Lansing, MI. She did her Bachelor's degree at Michigan State University and her Masters of Social Work at University of Michigan in Detroit.

WWII was just getting started as she graduated. She got a job in Postum, AZ as counselor for the Japanese Americans who were being held there. She met Howard B. Hollenbeck there. After the war, they married and got jobs in LA, where they lived for a year. Then they moved to Seattle, WA, where they stayed for a decade, and had their daughter. Later, they moved to Champaign-Urbana, IL and had their son.

The couple moved again to St. Louis, MO. Joyce was employed with the Webster Groves School District as social worker for the district. Later she worked for Family and Children's Service, and became assistant director for the agency. Howard died in 1967. She married Penfield D. Collins in 1973. They later moved to Sequim, WA for a decade, and then returned to St. Louis. She spent her last years in Ogden to be with her daughter.

Joyce's family was most important to her. She loved the outdoors, gardening, hiking and camping. She was a good pianist and an excellent photographer. She also enjoyed crafts.

Joyce was a Unitarian and was always very active in her church. She and Howard helped found Eliot Chapel in Kirkwood, MO. She was the pianist and organist for many years, and later directed the Sunday School.

Joyce is survived by her son, Michael (Sue) Hollenbeck of Rockledge, FL; daughter Christine (Richard) Arguello of Ogden, UT; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. Interment will be at the Ogden City Cemetery.
