Joyce Arlene Nicholls
Harrisville, UT - Joyce's work here is done. She received a call, an offer she couldn't refuse, for an appointment from which she will not be returning. This assignment comes with a huge sign-on bonus, a reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a long time, and job security is excellent. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place called Heaven where she will be socializing, laughing, planting flowers and taking care of all the animals. She left a message of her deep love for her posterity.
We want to let her know that she did a great job and wish her a safe journey. We will remember her smile, her warmth, her generosity, her love for her family and friends, including her love for animals. She worked very hard all her life. Joyce made a difference in the lives of many.
Joyce was the "Best Mom Ever"! even though "Best Mom Ever" is such a simple praise - it says so much. If you think about it: Each one of those words is powerful all by itself. "Best" - that means in the whole world there's none more impressive. "Mom" every single one of us who walks this earth has a mother who gave us life. "Ever" that's the entirety of all history, a time frame so vast that we can barely even conceive it.
So, when I call my mother the best mom ever, what I am saying is: There have been billions of people born to mothers in the whole span of human existence, and out of all of them, my mom is the greatest example of motherhood who has ever graced the surface of this planet.
Joyce stepped out of the working world in 1967 where she was a telephone operator in Evanston, WY to be the best mom ever, she opened our door to all the neighborhood kids and provided a safe place that many called home. Her genuine love for people impacted everyone she met. Mom lived life on her terms - full of love, and compassion. She met Eugene Nicholls in Evanston WY and fell in love. They started their life together in Evanston where they adopted their two daughters, Lynda (Jared) Phillips and Cindy (Marc) Webster. Gene worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and was transferred to the Ogden Utah area in 1971. They made their home in Roy Utah where they lived for 37 years, Joyce lost Gene in 2001, which broke her sweet heart. She didn't enjoy being alone and moved to Harrisville, UT in 2007 to live with Cindy and her family until the very end.
Joyce was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she held various callings in the Primary over the years. To her family, she was "The Best Mom Ever."
Joyce is survived by her daughters and their spouses; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren: siblings Carlene Barker, Byron Shaw and Russell Shaw.
She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Phoebe Shaw; her husband of 44 years; brother Merril Shaw and sister Verla Condos.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Alan Abdullah and the Legacy Hospice nurses Melissa, Sarah and Sydney.
