South Ogden, Utah
The bell has rung, and school is out. After 46 years of teaching and 89 years of learning, Karen Blair Lofgreen graduated with honors from this world and began a well deserved summer break on July 10, 2023.
Karen's mantra was a quote from Grandma Moses, "Life is what you make it." Karen made the most out of her life. She lived it to the fullest. No matter what the assignment, she put her heart and soul into it.
Karen started her teaching career in 1954 at age 20, teaching Kindergarten at Hopkins Elementary School, and retired in 2005 as a Professor of Elementary Education at her alma mater, Weber State University. While at Weber, she was instrumental in naming the David O. McKay Education Building and the Jerry and Vicki Moyes College of Education. She earned her Doctor of Education (EdD) from BYU and received an honorary doctorate from Weber State University.
Karen loved Weber College, where she received her Associates degree. She was actively involved with the LaDianaeda sorority and served as president. She has participated in many events at WSU and has received many honors including the Crystal Crest and Lou Shurtliff Awards. In 1996, Karen co-founded the Weber State Storytelling Festival, Tales to Remember. It has served students, families and communities in Ogden, Weber, Davis, and Morgan school districts for 27 years.
In 1954, Karen was sealed to her college sweetheart, Val Lofgreen, in the Logan LDS Temple. Together they raised two wonderful children - Launa and Blair. As the years passed, their family grew with the addition of 6 beautiful grandchildren and 7 rambunctious great-grandchildren. Family was the most important thing to Karen and Val, so there were many dinners, celebrations and family vacations. They made every effort to attend recitals, games and performances and could always be found helping with projects year after year. Additionally, they were blessed with friends who were as close family and traveled the world with them. Karen adored spending time with friends, especially monthly get-togethers with her dinner group, bridge group, book club, and Weber High friends. She was recognized as the Ogden City Mother of the Year in 2001. She so appreciated her association with that wonderful group of women.
Her faith was an integral part of her life, serving in various LDS church callings including directing 19 roadshows, writing for "The Friend" magazine, presenting at the BYU Womens' Conference, and serving on the Primary General Board where she was a proud member of the "Grassli Girls." Karen and Val served two LDS missions: Bucharest, Romania and the Sullivan Hollow 2nd Ward -- where they made lifelong friends.
Karen is survived by her sister, Maggie Favero, her daughter Launa (Reed) Costley, and her son Blair (Colleen) Lofgreen, with 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Zella Cowan and Seth M. Blair, her siblings: Marion Hoyt, Robert Blair, Bettie Bond, Edward Blair, Seth M. Blair Jr., and her husband, Val Lofgreen.
