Kate Bouwhuis Stokes Obituary (1908 - 2002)

Kate Bouwhuis Stokes Kate B. Stokes, 94, passed away at the Mount Ogden Nursing and Care Center on November 3, 2002 due to cancer. She was born on September 17, 1908 in Ogden, Utah to Fredrick Bouwhuis and Margaret Bosgieter Bouwhuis. Kate married Leonard Elvin Stokes on June 23, 1928 in Conrad, Montana and the marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on May 5, 1938. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Kate served various callings of the church including Primary, Relief Society and Sunday School. Kate's family moved to Black Pine, Idaho in 1909 and there they were neighbors with the Stokes family where she and Leonard grew up together and graduated together and were later married. They lived there for nine years which during that time their only child was born to them, Elvin Eugene Stokes. In 1938 Kate and Leonard moved to Baker, Idaho and lived there for 17 years and then moved to Salmon, Idaho in 1955. There they owned and operated the Idaho Farmers Coop until the time that Leonard passed away on August 29, 1967. During those years Kate was also an LPN at the Steele Memorial Hospital in Salmon. She is survived by one brother, W. Christian (Lavora) Bouwhuis of Ogden, UT; one sister, Katherine Marie Gant of Orem, UT; three grandchildren, Jeffery L. (Desiree') Stokes of Liberty, UT; Michael G. Stokes of Ogden, UT; Teresa K. (Kenny) Davidson of Ogden, UT; and daughter-in-law, Ila R. Stokes of Ogden, UT. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; and many relatives and friends of Salmon, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband; her son; sisters, Nellie Catherine Bouwhuis, Phoebe Catherine Sweitzer, Margaret Lyons, and Edna May Bouwhuis; brothers, Fred Bouwhuis and William Paul Bouwhuis. Kate was a very strong willed and independent woman. She lived on her own in Salmon, Idaho until 1999 at which time she moved to Ogden, Utah. Many thanks go to the wonderful staff at Mt. Ogden Nursing and Care Center from the family for their loving care that they gave to Kate during her stay there.
