Kay Shiba
1920 - 2010

CLEARFIELD - Kay Shiba was fiercely independent, hardworking, and fun loving, especially with his grandchildren. The most important lesson he learned in life was that you should never give up, keep working hard and then good things will happen. Good things happened for Kay.

Kay was born on December 21, 1920 to Ushizo and Kiku Shiba in Paul, Idaho. When he was five, his family moved to Utah where he attended schools in Weber and Davis Counties, graduating from Davis High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Germany. After returning from his service in 1946 he worked a farm in Syracuse, Utah. In 1948 he married Yasuko Miyawaki; they were happy to celebrate their 61st anniversary last year. In 1952, Kay made the decision to work as a civil servant at HAFB, where he had a successful 26-year career. After retiring in 1978, he worked delivering Meals on Wheels, packing/shipping for ZCMI, and caring for roses at a wholesale florist.

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle passed away after a valiant battle with heart complications, on November 15, 2010 surrounded by his family.

Kay is survived by his wife, Yasuko, daughter, Sandra (Harry) Sayama and son Dean (Cherith). Grandchildren, Kasey Sayama, Seve Sayama, Sydney Shiba, Grace Shiba, and Maggie Shiba, Douglas Sayama, Lisa (Robert) McCord, and Marcie (Brock) Smith. Sachie Kawabata, who was like a daughter to him. Sisters, Ume (Minoru) Miya and Tome Ujiiye. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Kay was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Heiju Shiba, Yoshio Shiba, and sisters Kiyo Shiba, Tatsu Shoji, Kikuyo Shiba, and Shigeko Kubota.
The family would like to convey their heartfelt appreciation to the amazing staff at the Ogden Regional Hospital ICU, particularly Dr. Whitaker, Keelee, Kathy, Nathan, Doug and Cynthia.
