Kenneth Thomas Read
ROY - Kenneth Thomas Read, age 82, peacefully returned to his Heavenly Father early Sunday morning, June 17, 2012 at McKay-Dee Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Ken was born of very strong pioneer heritage on May 9, 1930 in Ogden, Utah to Frank H. and LaVon G. Read. He spent his childhood years in both West Ogden and Hooper. One of his fondest memories is jumping from the old viaduct into the Weber River with his friends.
Ken served his country in the US Army from 1948 - 1951. He worked at Swift & Company for 20 years and continued his career at HAFB for 22 more years until his retirement.
Ken married Marie E. Newbold on August 25, 1950 in Ogden, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized on July 3, 1963 in the Logan Temple. He served as Assistant Ward Clerk, a Scout Leader in the Mutual Program, a member of the Sunday School Presidency and in the High Priest Group Leadership. He also was a very faithful Home Teacher, and over the last four years he and his wife served weekly in the temple.
Ken was a very easy person to be around. He had a unique way of making his family laugh and we will forever cherish those many memories. His hobbies and interests were: spending countless hours woodworking in his shed, maintaining his yard and spending time with his family. He loved taking care of his mother and all of her needs until her passing at 101 years old.
He is survived by his wife, Marie of 61 years and his children: Raelene (Rick) Kendrick - North Salt Lake, K.T. Read - South Salt Lake, Brenda (George) Salyers - Bristol, Tennessee, Kathy (Brad) Sawyer - South Ogden, Jeanie (Donnie) Howell - Roy: 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grand children with two more on the way. Ken is also survived by his siblings: Dorothy Dixon, Ilene Wall and his brother Blair (Blanche) Read. His parents and his brother Don preceded him in death.
The family would like to express a special thanks to IHC Hospice and the caring staff at McKay-Dee Hospital. We would also like to thank Dr. Jeffrey Booth who took such good care of him for 36 years.
"Remember me kindly, for we never truly die until we are forgotten."
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the West Haven Ward, 3628 South 2700 West, West Haven. A gathering for family and friends will be held prior to the service on Thursday at the church from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
