Larrie Arthur Carmichael Obituary (1934 - 2015)

Larrie Arthur Carmichael of Uintah, Utah, died, Sunday, October 26, 2015. He was born December 7, 1934 in Hope, North Dakota, to Robert J and Norma (Jacobsen) Carmichael. Drove to grade school in a horse-drawn covered snow sled and stone-boat. Family moved to Utah in 1944. Graduate of Weber Junior College and University of Utah Law School, Juris Doctor in 1963. Held various jobs though school, starting in third grade, picked fruit, Western Union, messenger boy, milk man, ditch digger, cannery, grocery store, night janitor, office boy Bureau of Land Management, cost accountant Cudahy and auditor Old Faithful Inn. Served in the US Army, paratrooper in Germany and Lebanon expeditions. Some military service officially did not happen. Assigned to E5 (sergeant) job in personnel, as such promoted himself to rank of E5. Starting in 1963 he was a trial attorney in Utah, also tried cases in Idaho, Nevada, Texas, California and North Dakota. He served as part time judge in various City Courts and part time Federal Magistrate in federal fish and game cases. Was state and federal public defender back when it was a public service by Court appointment. Member of the Utah State Bar, fraternal and civic organizations, and served on the board of a private school. Returned to Utah after living a few years in Chattanooga TN, Oklahoma City OK, and Minot ND. Was fond of opera and ballet. Flew Piper Cubs as a teenager. Enjoyed river boating (Friendship Cruise on Green and Colorado Rivers), skiing and snowmobiles. Collected his mother's artwork, prize-winning oil paintings and crafts. Raised roses. Liked to read about the Bronze Age, and travel, visiting relatives in Europe as a teenager, and vacationing in Palm Springs, CA. Survived by daughter Jamie (Carmichael) Swenson and Matt; grandsons Bjorn and Lars Swenson of North Dakota. Siblings Robert (Shawna) Carmichael, Kisten (Scott) Knudson, and many nieces and nephews. Former wife Joyce (Carmichael) Price. Preceded in death by brother John H. Carmichael, sisters Sandie G. Carmichael and Bertha Petra Carmichael. His ashes are to be scattered to the four winds.
