Laurel Clara Spencer Obituary (1927 - 2016)

Laurel Clara Bowen Spencer Click here to listen to the funeral recording. Laurel Spencer, age 89, returned peacefully to her Heavenly Father on October 13, 2016. Laurel was born September 19, 1927 in Payson, Utah to Albert Bowen and Lois Davis Bowen. She was raised in Payson, where she graduated as both Valedictorian and Concert Mistress. She went to the University of Utah where she became a registered nurse. She worked as a nurse several times in her life, but the longest stint was pro bono about 50 years for countless people on her street, in her ward, and a large circle of friends. Laurel met Robert Willard (Bob) Spencer on a blind date and they married in the Manti Temple on November 26, 1947. They are the parents of eight children, and enjoyed 28 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren, with two on the way. And counting! Her family was her greatest joy and most enduring legacy. Laurel was very bright and could have easily succeeded in many careers, but chose to give herself completely to her family and friends and in service to others. We know there are many who do now and will yet rise up to call her blessed. Only the Lord knows how many lives she has blessed. It cannot be measured in this mortal sphere. She spent 70 years helping strangers as well as friends, succoring those in need, comforting those who grieved, and counseling those who struggled. She was "steadfast and immoveable" in her faith, and consecrated her life to her husband, children, and friends. She was the consummate "example of the believers." Somehow she had a remarkable understanding of what the value of a life was. It showed in all she did, and resulted in making hers a life of inestimable value. Laurel is survived by her children: Scott Spencer (Jeanne), Reed Spencer (Nada), Lois Douglas (Ed), Ben Spencer (Karen), Don Spencer (Paige), Ken Spencer (Marnie), and Margaret Chevalier (John). She is also survived by her brother Don Bowen. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Willard (Bob) Spencer, her parents, brothers Albert Bowen (Afton) and Carl (Vaudys), and one daughter, Lynne Cude (Art). The family is grateful to all who have been a part of her life, including so many who have gone before her. We express our gratitude to gentle physicians and medical folks, and to all who have helped in any way to care for her these last few years. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 18th at the Canyon Hollow Ward at 1550 Rushton in Ogden. Friends may visit family on Monday, October 17th at Myers Mortuary (845 Washington Blvd.), and on Tuesday, October 18th from 9:30 to 10:30 prior to the funeral service at the church.
