LaVada Rae Cullens Johnston, 88 died on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. She was born on July 20, 1929 in Savery, Wyoming to Margaret Rachel and Glenn V. Cullens. She married M. Fred Johnston on March 23, 1949 in Ogden and their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple.
Her early life was spent in Savery until the family moved to Utah, eventually making their home in Hooper. She remained a resident of Hooper throughout the rest of her life. She attended the Hooper School through the 10th grade and graduated from Weber High. She enjoyed music, baking, sewing and getting a Christmas gift for each of her grand and great grandchildren.
As a member of the LDS Church, she served as president of the Primary and Relief Society, as a well as a teacher in various organizations. From 1990-1991, Dad and Mom served in the Kingston Jamaica Mission. They also were called as ordinance workers in the Ogden Utah Temple.
She is survived by her children, Hal (Kay) Johnston, Clark (Julie) Johnston, Gayle (Lynn) Bennington and Eileen (Kenneth) King, along with 15 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren. Her sisters, Laura DeGeorgio and Darhl McArthur, and a sister-in-law Jeannine DeWitt. She is also survived by her dear friend for the last 15 years, Ellis Kendrick. Preceding her in death are her husband, her parents, a grandson, Nathan Bennington, and brothers Vernal Wayne (Casey), and Melvin (Tuffy) Cullens.
We express our gratitude to Ellis for the friendship he offered mom during their many years of enjoying lunch together, taking drives to Cache Valley, attending horse shows and parades and watching Lawrence Welk each Saturday night.
We are also grateful to the staff of Country Pines Assisted Living Center for their tender care and service to mom over the last 4 years. You were her friends and she enjoyed each visit you made and your willingness to take an extra few minutes just to chat about whatever. Your visits during the last couple of days of her life were important to her.
